How much has the mayor spent in travel expenses and who did he dine with? How safe is my school? How polluted is the air in my part of town?…
None of these questions regard state secrets but, until today, access to this information has been denied to citizens, associations and journalists.
Now, this situation could change at last because after years of pressure and strife, the Freedom of Information Act (Foia) has also been passed in our country. This law grants free access to public documents. Certainly, it will not be easy to apply the law. The battles described here do not always have a happy end but are a sign that democracy may be exercised from the bottom and that the bureaucratic swamp may be defeated.
