Umberto Rapetto has been policing the Internet and doing such a good job of it that he knows what crimes will be committed even before the criminals do. A GDF General (the GDF is the Italian law enforcement agency responsible for dealing with financial crime and smuggling )he retired at the very early age of 52, guilty of having had the bad idea of doing an excellent job at conducting investigations – notably of a millionaire who caused major revenue losses due to his love of slot-machines – others perhaps less sensational –but equally as “sensitive”. In the 80’s , he was one of the pioneers in the fight against computer crime. He has written more than 50 books, notably “Cyberwar, the war against information” in 1996 (with a foreword by Beppe Grillo, an Internet-sceptic at the time) back in the days when the self-proclaimed experts of today were merely concerned with their Space Invaders score.
Umberto Rapetto is also a journalist (he writes for Nòva 24and runs the section entitled “The Patience of Job” on the Sole 24 Ore’s Job24 webpage) and a blogger (for Il Fatto Quotidiano). He teaches a course entitled “the cybernetic risk to businesses” as part of the Master’s in Cyber Security and Criminology at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. He is CEO of HKAO – Human Knowledge As Opportunity.
